    With the expansion of the Bonnybrook WTP, the City of Calgary was looking for a brick match to the existing facilities. With the original building proposed by the city in 1918, the facility has gone through numerous expansions, in 1940, 1954, 1960, 1972, 1980 and 1996. With the new addition in 2013, matching the brick to the various buildings was a challenge. Today one of the original small buildings where men hand-raked screen materials still remains.

    Sioux City Brick was able to provide the size, color and finish to blend in with the existing building by choosing a blend or 4 different colors of brick. These were blended at the plant level so that the mason’s only concern would be the laying of brick and not meeting a ratio blend in the field. Sioux City Brick celebrated their 100th Anniversary in 2013 and this project is a feature of what can be accomplished when given the time to resolve the opportunities presented.

    On this private residence, the owner was looking for a clean line natural stone product to compliment the cedar wood used on their home. After discussions of various materials, they decided to use the Indiana Limestone Berkshire in a single height thin veneer. The Berkshire line is a split face natural limestone available in full color blend, grey and buff. The owners chose the buff color to compliment the red cedar and black trims. With a height of 10.5” and lengths ranging from 40 to 48”, the stone shows a monolithic feel from a thin natural stone material.

    Indiana limestone is one of the oldest building materials in North America, with almost every major government building in the continental USA using this stone. From grey or buff to full color blend this natural stone has a slight sparkle in the sunlight. With natural split face or a smooth face finish, Indiana Limestone Company creates works of art. The owners are very proud of the final product and design used to create their new home.

    The south building of Southpark Centre which hold down a prominent location between Calgary Trail and Gateway Blvd. underwent extensive renovations in 2015 after the departure of one of its major anchor tenants. Edmonton’s first Whole Foods grocery store was intended to occupy the renovated space that was formerly a Canadian Tire. Additional buildings in the same style have subsequently been added to the east side of the Southpark Centre site.

    This project was designed by Dialog Architecture and utilizes a modular size (3-5/8”D x 2-1/4” H x 7-5/8”L) brick from Sioux City Brick. Dialog selected a variegated red colour called Napa Valley in a velour texture as the main building colour with large accent areas of Sioux City Brick, Ebonite, Velour. A stack bond pattern was used exclusively on both brick colours which lends a contemporary feel to the brick elements. Wood accents were also added to provide a warm contrast to both the red and black brick. Cast stone from Continental Cast Stone in colour 1102 Natural Stone is the base stone around the perimeter of the building and is used as an accent sill. Prestige Masonry Inc. completed this project over the winter of 2015-16 and did an admirable job executing the difficult stack bond pattern under heating and hoarding conditions.

    The Jean Baptiste Sewepagaham School was designed as a full masonry building with CMU walls and brick veneer. The biggest challenge on the project was the remote location and aggressive construction schedule. Fox Lake is just south of the Northwest Territories border in northern Alberta. All materials for the project had to be shipped in winter on an ice road or barged in on the river. All the brick and block for this project was brought to site by K. Hansen Masonry over six weeks beginning in January 2010 on trucks over the ice road. Despite the many challenges the project was completed ahead of schedule and under budget.

    A&E Architectural group chose to utilize a rangy red brick from Hanson Brick called ‘Medium Range, Shaletex in a metric modular size. The accent colour is Sunnybrook Blend, Matt also from Hanson Brick

    This custom built residential home in south Edmonton utilized the smaller ledgestone profile of the Boulder Creek Long Island Stak for a crisp, clean line of stone material.The Long Island Stak comes in 7 colors from a black/brown mix to pure white.The Long Island Stak is a panel style dry stack material and comes with a 30 year manufactures warranty. This newer style from Boulder Creek is rapidly becoming the new “fit” for manufactured stone materials and has a durable and natural stone finish.

    Edmonton’s newest fire station had its grand opening celebration November 3rd, 2012. The 17,000 sq.ft. station is located in the southeast and is Edmonton Fire Rescue’s 27th station. The project was designed to allow improved access to the Henday Drive, Calgary Trail and Highway #2 and provide training facilities that all fire rescue personal on the south side of the city will utilize. The station features three drive through bays as well as living and a segregated storage areas.

    The project was designed by Architecture Arndt Tkalcic Bengert and utilizes a norman size (3-5/8”D x 2-1/4” H x 11-5/8”L) brick from Endicott Clay Products. The Red Blend, smooth colour was chosen due to its rich red colour. The brick was laid in a third bond pattern. The concrete block masonry back up walls together with the brick allowed for deep returns to the windows which creates a great sense of mass to the exterior walls.  Scorpio Masonry (Northern) Ltd. was the masonry contractor for this project. Brick was installed in the winter 2011 and spring of 2012.

    Completed in the fall of 2011, The Cash Store Financial new head office stands tall on this busy corner and the manganese brick creates a changing color spectrum throughout the day. One of the advantages of the Endicott Clay Manganese brick is the mottled effect that is created when the sun strikes the brick at different angles, thus creating changes in the contrast of the brick from steel glossy to hard cold black. 

    The Cash Store Financials new head office took advantage of the Endicott Clay Products Manganese full veneer brick in modular and utility sizes on the exterior. The interior of the building made use of complimentary thin brick. The full brick in the modular size, utilized a velour finish for the towering walls on the building. The utility brick, in a smooth finish was used for the base of the building and featured an L-Corner shape for a continuous brick wrap. Thin brick was utilized on the interior of the building to create the continuous flow from the outside to the interior. The thin brick is in the modular size with a velour finish.

    The PCL Modular Yard & Lunchroom is a new two-story office building which replaces more than 30 work trailers at PCL’s Nisku Module yard. This new facility will provide 35,000 square feet of permanent space to accommodate PCL teams in Nisku. Key elements of the facility include, providing lunchroom facilities, as well as training and meeting spaces. Modest offices are located on the second floor and special acoustical solutions were developed to mitigate the noise transfer between the lunchroom area and the offices.

    ONPA Architects chose Endicott Clay Products, Manganese Ironspot, Velour Utility size brick as the feature exterior finish and contrasted it with metal panel. ONPA designed the veneer in two bond patterns to differentiate elements of the building.  Stack bond was utilized above the entrance and foyer window with the balance of the building completed in 1/3rd bond. The unusual sheen of the Manganese Ironspot colour changes throughout the day depending on the amount of sunlight exposed to the brick. Endicott Manganese Ironspot Velour is available in 12 sizes and 7 texture finishes.

    This building was completed over the winter of 2012 by Deutsch Masonry Inc. on a strictly regulated industrial jobsite to a challenging time line. Deutsch also utilized EaCo Chem NMD80 new masonry detergent to wash the newly installed brick. EaCo Chem’s no scrubbing, power wash cleaning system realized a significant time and labour savings to the mason over traditional bucket and brush cleaning methods.

    With the ongoing construction of the LRT system in Edmonton, the Kingsway Legion was forced to move locations to make way for the north line expansion. Thus, the Kingsway Legion is now located on the west side of Manning Freeway. The Kingsway Legion will be a new home for our veterans providing open air spaces and a large banquet room. The Kingsway Legion will attract new and old to this outstanding project.
